| Abstract in Lingua Inglese | On April 20, 1837, Visiani delivered his inaugural speech in Italian at Padua University. In his exquisite and rather poetically inspired style he exposed his ideas on the role and place of the plants in nature and on the advantage man benefits from them. This speech, a eulogy for plants and botany, was delivered at a time when among the natural scientists the natural philosophy imbued with theology still prevailled: plants are the most important link in the long "chain of creations" where the lower ones, minerals and plants, serve the higher ones, animals and man. The work is divided into three parts: 1. The importance of plants in the economy of nature; 2. usefulness of plants to man; and 3. the purpose of botany. His expositions end: "For Visiani botany is not a purpose for itself; it is exclusively meant for man". |
