| Abstract in Lingua Inglese | After some short clarifying remarks on the "Nationes" in the University of Padua, particular attention is paid to the anatomist from Augsburg, Johan Georg Wirsung, member of the Natio germanica Artistarum who discovered in 1642 at Padua the pancreatic duct and which he depicted in the first autograph engraving. This plate is the only example at present of an anatomical illustration made by a medical doctor to spread word of a discovery and establish its chronological priority. It was kept for a long time in the casket belonging to the Natio and though lost trak of at the time of the fall of the Venetian Republic, fortunately it was later rediscovered. Now it is on displey at the permanent historical exhibition in the Palazzo del Bo at the University of Padua. Wirsung was assassinated in Padua in 1643 by a Flemish student and is buried in the Chapter cloister of the Church of St. Antony where a memorial can also be seen on the wall. |
